If you’ve been scrolling through Instagram lately, you’ve likely seen surreal images of vibrant pink waters under a blazing sun. It’s not a filter—it’s Las Coloradas, the world-famous Pink Lake of Mexico.
Located on the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, this destination has evolved from a hidden gem into a bucket-list staple for travelers seeking out-of-this-world landscapes. Here is everything you need to know to plan your visit.
Las coloradas-Mexico´s pink lake

What Exactly is Las Coloradas?
While often called a “pink lake,” Las Coloradas is actually a series of salt evaporation ponds owned by a private salt-producing company.
Why is the water pink?
The color is 100% natural. It is caused by a high concentration of microorganisms, specifically the microalgae Dunaliella salina and halobacteria. These organisms produce red pigments to protect themselves from the intense sunlight. When combined with the high salinity of the water, they create that iconic bubblegum pink hue.

How to Get to the Pink Lake of Mexico
Accessibility has improved, but it remains a significant trip from the main tourist hubs. Here are your options:
From Cancun or Playa del Carmen: Between 3 and 3.5 hours. We highly recommend renting a car or booking a private tour.
From Merida: Approximately 3 hours by car (via Motul or Tizimín).
From Valladolid: The shortest route, taking about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Traveler Tip: If driving yourself, make sure to fill your gas tank in Tizimín. Gas stations become very scarce as you get closer to the coast.
Prices and Hours (2026 Update)
To ensure conservation and safety, access is regulated by local guides.
Why? The pink intensity depends entirely on the sun’s position. On cloudy days or early in the morning, the water can appear brown or gray.
Entrance Fee: Around $300 – $400 MXN per person. Best Time to Visit: Aim for the window between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
Is Las Coloradas Worth the Trip?
Absolutely. Even though it is a long drive, the visual contrast between the white salt dunes, the turquoise sky, and the pink water is a sight you won’t find anywhere else in Mexico.
Pro-Tip: Combine your visit with a trip to Rio Lagartos, a nearby fishing village. You can take a boat tour through the mangroves to see crocodiles and enjoy a traditional “Mayan Mud Bath.”
Your Visit Checklist:
- Biodegradable Sunscreen.
- Plenty of Water.
- Polarized Sunglasses (to better see the pink contrast!).
- Cash (Pesos): Most local guides and small shops do not accept credit cards.
Are you ready to witness the magic of the Pink Lake of Mexico? Add Las Coloradas to your Yucatan itinerary and get ready for the photos of a lifetime.
